Greenfield and brownfield investments and economic growth : evidence from Central and Eastern European Union countries
Yilmaz Bayar, 2017, original scientific article

Abstract: Global foreign direct investment flows in terms of greenfield and brownfield investments have increased during the recent three decades resulting from the accelerating globalization. The considerable increases in the flows of foreign direct investment have many eventualities for the national economies. This study investigates the mutual effects among greenfield and brownfield (mergers and acquisitions) investments and economic growth in Central and Eastern European Union countries during the 2003–2015 period employing panel data analysis. The findings revealed that both greenfield and brownfield investments had positive influence on the economic growth, but the influence of greenfield investments was found to be relatively higher. Furthermore, one-way causality was discovered from both greenfield and brownfield investments to the economic growth.

Educationa Park - Technical Academy Maribor
Samanta Rebernak, 2016, master's thesis

Abstract: The Educational Park - Technical Academy Maribor is a new concept with which we wish to enrich the city of Maribor. The main idea is to connect research and education with practical experience, start up companies and the production spaces of big companies. This broad content with multiple additions could be placed in the Business Industrial Zone Tezno, with certain modifications to the existing structures. This thesis deals with the evolution of industrial architecture and especially its importance to the city of Maribor. We present an in depth historical analysis of the company TAM, the predecessor of today’s BIZ Tezno, which was one of the biggest factories with research facilities and educational spaces in the former Yugoslavia. The urban master plan consists of the placement of the afore-mentioned content in the facilities of BIZ Tezno. The idea is to create an open, inviting space that would be a part of city life, with the addition of sports facilities, pool areas, a museum of industrial heritage, a concert hall, etc. As a continuation of the master plan, we also designed an industrial architectural model that shows how the concept of the Educational park can be implemented in the facilities of an established company. We also contemplated the use of renewable materials and, therefore, used timber in the construction. The facility would be an addition to the brand image of any company that values sustainable development and progress.

Interdisciplinary methodological approach to the process of brownfield revitalisation of traditional industrial areas
Lučka Lorber, 2011, original scientific article

Abstract: Traditional industrial regions in the South-East Europe (SEE) represent an underexplored economic value. Revitalisation is delayed and hindered because of legal, financial, environmental and image problems. This weakens competitive investment position for cities and for SEE as a European region. This paper aims at presenting interdisciplinary methodological approach used in a brownfield revitalisation research project. The research work methodology applies the endogenous approach ("bottom up") on a basis of newly defined land use category of brownfields by the local community. Geography science enjoys an advantage of complexity of understanding spatial issues. This enables geographers to coordinate and harmonize interests between the owners, stakeholders, legislation and human resources. In addition to geographical areas (economic, traffic, demographic, environmental and regional geography) directly involved in the project applicative research, this also includes collaboration of architects, lawyers and economists. The form of applicative research work presented is being developed within the international Revitalisation of Traditional Industrial Areas in South-East Europe (ReTInA) project. The project is funded in the context of the SEE European Transnational Cooperation Programme 2009/12, involving ten partners from seven countries. The main result of the project will be the new methodology and tools to boost brownfield revitalisation in the municipalities and in old industrial areas of SEE region.

Revitalizacija starega industrijskega območja Cinkarne Celje
Tina Dobravc, 2011, undergraduate thesis

Abstract: Industrializacija, katere začetki segajo v začetek devetnajstega stoletja, je povzročila velike socialne in ekonomske spremembe v prostoru. Industrijski razvoj Celja je pospešila izgradnja južne železnice Dunaj–Trst. Ob novih prometnih vpadnicah so se pričela oblikovati industrijska območja. Tako segajo začetki razvoja Cinkarne Celje v drugo polovico devetnajstega stoletja. Pomemben mejnik predstavlja deindustrializacija po drugi svetovni vojni z razvojem novih tehnologij, proizvodov in informatiko. Stara industrijska središča med katere spada nedvomno Celje, niso zaznala trenda prihajajočih gospodarskih sprememb. S tujko jih imenujemo brownfield. V diplomskem delu z naslovom Revitalizacija starega industrijskega območja Cinkarna Celje želimo predstaviti primer dobre prakse revitalizacije okoljsko degradiranega območja dela stare Cinkarne Celje. Propad so pospešili zaostreni tržni pogoji in zakonska obveznost spoštovanja okoljevarstvene zakonodaje. Želeni cilji so sanacija okolja, varovanja nepozidanih površin in izboljšanje kakovosti onesnažene zemlje, vodnih virov in ozračja. Pristop k revitalizaciji predstavlja sodoben model preobrazbe degradiranega industrijskega območja z večnamensko rabo prostora.
