The MINLP approach to topology, shape and discrete sizing optimization of trusses

Abstract: The paper presents the Mixed-Integer Non-linear Programming (MINLP) approach to the synthesis of trusses. The solution of continuous/discrete non-convex and non-linear optimization problems is discussed with respect to the simultaneous topology, shape and discrete sizing optimization of trusses. A truss MINLP superstructure of different topology and design alternatives has been generated, and a special MINLP model formulation for trusses has been developed. In the optimization model, a mass objective function of the structure has been defined and subjected to design, load and dimensioning constraints. The MINLP problems are solved using the Modified Outer-Approximation/Equality-Relaxation (OA/ER) algorithm. Multi-level MINLP strategies are introduced to accelerate the convergence of the algorithm. The Modified Two-Phase and the Sequential Two-Phase MINLP strategies are proposed in order to solve highly combinatorial topology, shape and discrete sizing optimization problems. The importance of local buckling constraints on topology optimization is also discussed. Some simple numerical examples are shown at the end of the paper to demonstrate the suitability and efficiency of the proposed method.

A strategy for MINLP synthesis of flexible and operable processes

Abstract: Abstract This paper presents a sequential two-stage strategy for the stochastic synthesis of chemical processes in which flexibility and static operability (the ability to adjust manipulated variables) are taken into account. In the first stage, the optimal flexible structure and optimal oversizing of the process units are determined in order to assure feasibility of design for a fixed degree of flexibility. In the second stage, the structural alternatives and additional manipulative variables are included in the mathematical model in order to introduce additional degrees of freedom for efficient control. The expected value of the objective function is approximated in both stages by a novel method, which relies on optimization at the central basic point (CBP). The latter is determined by a simple set-up procedure based on calculations of the objective functionćs conditional expectations for uncertain parameters. The feasibility is assured by simultaneous consideration of critical vertices. The important feature of the proposed stochastic model is that its size depends mainly on the number of design variables and not on the number of uncertain parameters. The strategy is illustrated by two examples for heat exchanger network synthesis.

An integrated strategy for the hierarchical multilevel MINLP synthesis of overall process flowsheets using the combined synthesis/analysis approach

Abstract: This paper describes an integrated strategy for a hierarchical multilevel mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) synthesis of overall process schemes using a combined synthesis/analysis approach. The synthesis is carried out by multilevel-hierarchical MINLP optimization of the flexible superstructure, whilst the analysis is performed in the economic attainable region (EAR). The role of the MINLP synthesis step is to obtain a feasible and optimal solution of the multi-D process problem, and the role of the subsequent EAR analysis step is to verify the MINLP solution and in the feedback loop to propose any profitable superstructure modifications for the next MINLP. The main objective of the integrated synthesis is to exploit the interactions between the reactor network, separator network and the remaining part of the heat/energy integrated process scheme.

The multilevel MINLP optimization approach to structural synthesis: the simultaneous topology, material, standard and rounded dimension optimization

Abstract: The paper describes the simultaneous topology, material, standard and rounded dimension optimization of mechanical structures, performed by the Mixed-Integer Non-linear Programming (MINLP) approach. Beside the generation of an MINLP mechanical superstructure, the development of a general multilevel MINLP formulation for a mechanical superstructure is presented. The consideration of the discrete materials as well as standard and particularly rounded dimensions in structural synthesis significantly increases the combinatorics of the discrete optimization, which as a result may become too difficult to solve. A Linked Multilevel Hierarchical Strategy (LMHS) has been introduced for the solving of such large combinatorial problems. In order to decrease the effect of non-convexities, the Modified Outer-Approximation/Equality-Relaxation (OA/ER) algorithm has been applied. Four numerical examples of different complexities are presented to illustrate the proposed multilevel MINLP optimization approach: the optimization of two steel trusses, a composite I beam and a hydraulic steel roller gate Intake gate, erected in Aswan II, Egypt.

Synthesis of non-isothermal heat integrated water networks in chemical processes

Abstract: This paper presents a new approach for the simultaneous synthesis and optimization of heat integrated water networks. A new superstructure for heat exchanger network (HEN) synthesis is proposed. The procedure is based on mixed integer non-linear mathematical programming (MINLP). Four relevant examples are presented to illustrate various aspects of the proposed approach.
