Margaret Atwood, world-famous but yet to be discovered by many Slovene readers
Tomaž Onič, Michelle Gadpaille, Jason Blake, Tjaša Mohar, 2020, original scientific article

Abstract: Margaret Atwood is the only Canadian author whose 80th birthday in 2019 was celebrated by the global academic community. This is not surprising, as she is the most famous Canadian writer, popular also outside literary circles. On this occasion, Slovene Canadianists organized a literary event at the Maribor University Library, which presented an outline of Atwood’s oeuvre and a selection of translated poems and excerpts of prose texts; some of these were translated especially for the event. Of Atwood’s rich and varied oeuvre, only eight novels, a few short fiction pieces and some thirty poems have been translated into Slovene. This article thus aims at presenting those aspects of Atwood’s work which are less know to Slovene readers. It is no secret that Atwood is often labelled a feminist writer, mostly on account of The Handmaid’s Tale and the TV series based on the novel. However, many Slovene readers may not know that she also writes poetry, short fiction, non-fiction and children’s literature, that she is a committed environmentalist, and that she discussed the problem of “Debt and the Shadow Side of Wealth” in a prestigious lecture series. There are not many authors who master as many genres as Atwood and who are so well-received by readers and critics alike. The latter is true of Atwood also in Slovenia, and we can only hope that Slovene publishers will make more of Atwood’s work available to Slovene readers. All the more so since Atwood has no plans to end her career: just before her 80th birthday she was on a tour in Europe promoting her latest novel, The Testaments, and she would have continued touring in 2020 were it not for the COVID pandemic.

Literature in the English Classroom in the Final Three Years of Primary School : master's thesis
Zala Jug, 2025, master's thesis

Abstract: Literature plays an essential role in language learning, since it offers students an engaging and meaningful way to develop their language skills and critical thinking. This Thesis deals with the integration of literature into English language teaching in the final three years of primary school in Slovenia. The theoretical part of the Thesis examines the fundations for integrating literature into English language teaching in Slovene primary school by examining how reading comprehension is addressed in the Curriculum for the final three years of Primary School, as well as the objectives, standards and l themes outlined in the Curriculum. It also investigates the role that literature plays in learning a foreign language, focusing not only on its role in developing students' language skills but also on its importance for rasing students' sociocultural awareness. The empirical part is divided into two parts: the first one analyses literary texts that are included in the English textbooks currently used in the final three years of primary school to assess their frequency and their pedagogical role. Based on the findings, the second part proposes a list of additional literary texts suitable to be used in the English classroom for their alignment with the Curriculum's objectives, as well as for addressing socially relevant themes that reflect contemporary social issues.

Izzivi komuniciranja samooskrbe v času podnebnih in družbenih sprememb
Tomaž Onič, Ana Vovk, David Hazemali, Tjaša Mohar, Bernarda Leva, Nastja Prajnč Kacijan, Kirsten Hempkin, Katja Plemenitaš, Barbara Majcenovič Kline, 2025, independent scientific component part or a chapter in a monograph

Abstract: Pomen pojma »samooskrba« postaja v sodobnem času vse kompleksnejši, saj poleg ekonomskih vključuje tudi socialne, kulturne, okoljske in politične razsežnosti.

Communicating the climate crisis : stories in the classroom
Nastja Prajnč Kacijan, Bernarda Leva, Barbara Majcenovič Kline, David Hazemali, Tjaša Mohar, Katja Plemenitaš, Tomaž Onič, Kirsten Hempkin, 2025, independent scientific component part or a chapter in a monograph

Abstract: As the climate crisis escalates, educators find themselves frequently having to engage with this issue in a classroom context. A significant contribution that educators, especially language teachers, can make is connected to communicating about environmental questions and helping learners develop the critical skills and competences to engage with such questions fully. In this contribution, we present a series of tasks drawing upon the medium of stories – both fiction and non-fiction, for younger and older learners – which are designed to develop a number of key competences: enhance vocabulary in English relating to climate issues; develop awareness of the key themes regarding these issues; increase learners' critical thinking (regarding the use of language specifically) concerning information available on climate change and related issues.

Trajnostna destinacijska komunikacija v teoriji in praksi
David Hazemali, Tomaž Onič, Tjaša Mohar, Barbara Majcenovič Kline, Nastja Prajnč Kacijan, Katja Plemenitaš, Kirsten Hempkin, Ana Vovk, Bernarda Leva, 2025, independent scientific component part or a chapter in a monograph

Abstract: Prispevek obravnava koncept trajnostne destinacijske komunikacije kot ključni element sodobnega turizma.

Framing of sea level rise in news headlines : a study of The Guardian and The New York Times
Tjaša Mohar, Nastja Prajnč Kacijan, Kirsten Hempkin, Bernarda Leva, Tomaž Onič, Barbara Majcenovič Kline, David Hazemali, Katja Plemenitaš, 2025, independent scientific component part or a chapter in a monograph

Abstract: The deepening of the environmental crisis brings an increased need for clear and targeted communication about environmental issues, leading to greater environmental awareness and encouraging the necessary changes in people’s behaviour. The way the media frames reports on environmental issues, such as climate change, plays a crucial role in the efficient communication of these issues. This paper examines how sea level rise was reported in the digital editions of The Guardian and The New York Times in 2022, utilizing framing theory – a theory that is used in textual linguistics to study texts on socially important topics in public discourse. The study identifies the predominant generic frames in the headlines and subheads of these articles, which are the key framing locations. A comparative analysis also reveals differences in the framing of sea level rise in the two newspapers.

The Influence of Intersectionality on the Mental Health of Female Characters in Tsitsi Dangarembga's Nervous Conditions : master's thesis
Melani Lesjak, 2024, master's thesis

Abstract: This Master’s thesis analyses the influence of intersectionality on the mental health of female characters in Tsitsi Dangarembga’s novel Nervous Conditions. It aims to illuminate the intersecting axes of oppression for each of the female characters to enable a better understanding of the situational context that instigates specific mental disorders in the characters. To foster a better understanding of the characters’ situational context, the Shona’s cultural significance and Zimbabwe’s colonial history are addressed, while the postcolonial theory is used in the analysis of the novel. Furthermore, studies investigating the influence of the intersectional axes of race, gender, culture and class on women’s mental health function as the foundation in the interpretation of the findings of the analysis. Definitions of mental disorders, taken from the World Health Organization and Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Illnesses are used in identifying mental disorders in Dangarembga’s female characters. By illustrating the complexity of marginalised experiences, in which the oppressional axes of gender, race, class and cultural identity intersect and result in mental disorders, this thesis also highlights the need for a thorough and holistic approach to understanding women’s mental health in postcolonial societies.
