Mind Style Analysis of Emma Donoghue's Protagonist in the Novel Room
Valerija Tominc, 2018, master's thesis

Abstract: Emma Donoghue’s main character and narrator in Room is a literary construct with a severely deviant mind style that portrays a unique outlook on the world. The protagonist is a five-year-old boy who has been living in extreme social isolation his whole life. His mother was kidnapped, locked in a room and repeatedly raped and gave birth to a son named Jack. The dissertation analyses and outlines the deviant features of his mind style. The analysis later focuses on the underlying reason that inspired or even provoked the author to construct such a deviant mind style. Two possible phenomena are introduced as the basis for the analysis. The first theory that is researched and then compared to the constructed mind style, is the theory of feral people, individuals living in extreme social isolation. Certain cases were supposedly raised by animals, others contained in small spaces without human contact. The second possible theory explaining Donoghue’s unique mind style construction, is an autistic disorder. Characteristics of feral and autistic individuals are often similar and sometimes even overlap, which is why this phenomenon was chosen as an alternative option for the basis of the construction of Jack’s mind style. The dissertation finally tries to determine, whether a feral or autistic nature can be ascribed to the protagonist, and to what extent he pertains to either theory.

Linguistic Analysis of Expressing Gender, Gender Identity, Gender Inclusiveness, and Gender Neutrality in the Context of the Transgender Phenomenon in Contemporary English and Slovene Language
Tina Ritlop, 2020, master's thesis

Abstract: This thesis explores linguistic possibilities, limitations, and innovations concerning gender and gender identity in the context of the transgender phenomenon and how gender-inclusiveness or gender-neutrality affect their expression. To avoid ambiguity and misunderstandings, the terminological basis and theoretical background are presented and critically analysed, including English and Slovene sources; moreover, it is specified how certain terms are used in the following discussions. The thesis looks at early examples of gender-inclusive and gender-neutral English language as well as contemporary usages and innovations, especially in the field of alternative personal pronouns, and evaluates their practicality. Furthermore, linguistic and other issues are discussed in relation to the common transgender ideology through the analysis of selected examples of transgender people’s memoirs and other personal narratives (YouTube content), presenting their common perception of the state of being transgender and noting the stereotypies this entails or perpetuates. In relation to this, the thesis also reviews a recent study on the topic of transgender children’s gender development. The thesis then compares Slovene with English in the context of expressing gender to show some differences between them and notes certain grammatical and other limitations of Slovene. Additionally, the thesis provides its author’s own suggestions for English as well as Slovene gender-neutral language.

Stories behind the dining table: the meaning and use of food in selected prose fiction by Alice Munro and Margaret Atwood
Lucija Dežan, 2019, master's thesis

Abstract: Magistrsko delo obravnava pomen in rabo hrane v izbranih delih kanadskih pisateljic Alice Munro in Margaret Atwood. V analizo sta zajeta dva romana Atwoodove, in sicer The Edible Woman in Lady Oracle (Preročišče), Alice Munro pa je znana kot avtorica kratkih zgodb, zato analiza njenih del zajema deset kratkih zgodb iz treh različnih zbirk: Too Much Happiness (Preveč sreče), Who do You Think You Are? in The View from Castle Rock (Pogled z grajske pečine).

Eva Cassandra Diane Fartek, 2019, master's thesis

Abstract: Književnost nam daje primere jezika v svoji najboljši obliki.

Botanično izrazje v slovenskih prevodih izbranih del Williama Shakespearja: analiza izvirnika in prevodov
Nina Balažek, 2019, master's thesis

Abstract: V magistrskem delu Botanično izrazje v slovenskih prevodih izbranih del Williama Shakespearja: analiza izvirnika in prevodov so zbrana imena rastlin in rož, ki se pojavljajo v Shakespearjevih delih, tragediji Hamlet in komediji Sen kresne noči. Imena rastlin in rož smo pridobili iz različnih virov, in sicer smo izhajali iz članka Phyllis Cooka William Shakespeare, Botanist, Henry Ellacombove knjige The Plant-Lore & Garden-Craft of Shakespeare in Male flore Slovenije (Martinčič idr. 1999), s pomočjo katere smo klasificirali rastline in rože. Imena smo zbirali ročno z branjem izvirnikov in njihov prevod preverjali v šestih slovenskih prevodih. Uporabili smo štiri slovenske prevode drame Hamlet, in sicer prevod Otona Župančiča, Milana Jesiha, Janka Modra in Srečka Fišerja ter dva slovenska prevoda drame Sen kresne noči, Otona Župančiča in Milana Jesiha.

The Revelation of Virginia Woolf`s Existentialist Aesthetics in the novels To the Lighthouse and The Waves
Maša Sitar, 2018, master's thesis

Abstract: My thesis is that Virginia Woolf subverts the conventional notion of time and in refusing to accept the chronological sequence of time, adopts Henri Bergson's time philosophy. The common ground between these two authors is analysed through their interest in human consciousness, their epistemological interest in the interaction between memory and perception, their adoption of a specific world-view and the importance of imagery in strengthening thematic content. Woolf’s treatment of philosophical concepts of time, memory and intuition indicates that she is predominately influenced by Bergson. Though not conclusive, the analysis may contribute to our understanding of Woolf’s fiction and illuminate certain aspects of Woolf's work. Using Woolf's novels To the Lighthouse and The Waves as primary texts to elucidate the human experience of time, provides sufficient evidence to prove that Woolf’s system of ideas relies on Bergsonian time philosophy; in particular, the research aims to prove that Woolf fully adhered to his conceptualization of dualist temporality and built her fiction upon Bergsonian dualisms. In this context, we unravel the importance of unity, continuity, epiphany and intuition. These concepts are used to explore the unified experience of time and hold the key to temporal illumination, for in illuminating transience, Woolf also illuminates the manner of transcending it. Thus, she creates a viewpoint that discloses continuity and unfolds in unity. By combining apparently irreconcilable dualisms, she reveals the Bergsonian idea of the multiplicity of conscious states and surpasses the absurdity of life; in other words, this philosophy provides Woolf with a key to answering the existential question of the meaning of life.

Representation of Gender in Books for the English Reading Competitions in First and Second Triad of Primary School
Nadja Kotnik, 2018, master's thesis

Abstract: The purpose of the MA thesis was to analyse 21 easy readers in terms of gender. The easy readers included in the analysis appeared on one of the two reading lists for the English reading competitions, EPI reading badge and Bookworms in the academic year 2015/2016. The books were examined with quantitative, qualitative and linguistic analysis with the aim of revealing gender bias and stereotyping in the characterization of male and female characters. An initial overview of the sample revealed great diversity in the sample – almost half the sample represented re-written versions of older books, while the other half were books with original plots or adaptations based on recent films. With regard to quantitative analysis, an underrepresentation of female characters was identified in the text as well as the illustrations. In general, males predominated in every category that we quantitatively analysed, but there were a few books where this was not the case. The qualitative and linguistic analysis provided mixed results. There were some newer easy readers where progress in terms of defying gender stereotypes and discrimination was noticeable, but some older books expressed evident gender bias.

Black Identity in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Novel Americanah
Nika Vaupotič, 2018, master's thesis

Abstract: The thesis analysed the formation of black identity in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel Americanah (2013). It aimed to uncover whether it is possible to talk about black identity, how it is formed and what influences its formation. It primarily explored how the author presented the formation of black identity in the protagonist of the novel through factors such as race, racism and racial terminology, body image, skin, hair and hair salons. In conducting the analysis of the problem, various critical approaches have been used, such as close reading of the text, formalist and stylistic analyses, review of literature and scholarly articles about the author and black identity, and the biographical method, followed by an evaluation and comprehensive interpretation of the topic in the scope of historical, social and linguistic contexts. Based on the examples presented, it appeared that exposure to various forms of racism, racial discrimination and marginalization, primarily connected to visual appearance, social position, treatment and opportunities (e.g., lighter skin and straighter hair improve one’s job prospects), led the protagonist to discover the meaning of being black in America. Thus, the research showed that the formation of black identity is influenced by the environment in which one lives and the social attitudes to which one is exposed.

Abstract: Ocenjevanje in vrednotenje učbenikov za angleški jezik ni enostavna naloga.
