Antimicrobial properties of different hop (Humulus lupulus) genotypes

Abstract: The antimicrobial activity of hop extracts obtained from different hop genotypes were investigated against Staphylococcus aureus and Lactobacillus acidophilus. In this study the pure xanthohumol, purified β-acids rich fraction, as well as α-acids with β-acids rich fraction were used to test antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Lactobacillus acidophilus; whereby, the antimicrobial activity of different hop extracts against Lactobacillus acidophilus was studied for the first time. Microbial susceptibility to purified hydroacetonic extracts from different hop varieties was investigated by the broth microdilution assay to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). The hop hydroacetonic extracts were more effective against Staphylococcus aureus than against Lactobacillus acidophilus. Strong inverse correlations of MIC and MBC values were obtained with xanthohumol, cohumulone, n+adhumulone, colupulone and n+adlupulone contents, suggesting that the identified chemical hop compounds are directly responsible for antimicrobial effects. Moreover, the effect of the growth medium strength on the MIC values of hop extracts against Staphylococcus aureus was systematically investigated for the first time. The current study also reveals the effect of different hop extracts on Staphylococcus aureus, which responds to their presence by lag phase extension and generation time prolongation.

Slot‑die coating of cellulose nanocrystals and chitosan for improved barrier properties of paper

Abstract: Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and chitosan (Cht) have been studied extensively for oxygen and water vapour barrier coatings in biodegradable, compostable or recyclable paper packaging. However, rare studies have been performed by using scalable, inexpensive, and fast continuous slot-die coating processes, and none yet in combination with fast' and high-throughput near-infrared (NIR) light energy drying. In this frame, we studied the feasibility of a moderately concentrated (11 wt%) anionic CNC and (2 wt%) cationic Cht coating (both containing 20 wt% sorbitol related to the weight of CNC/Cht), by using plain and pigment pre-treated papers. The effect of coating parameters (injection speed, dry thickness settings) were investigated on coating quantity (dry weight, thickness) and homogeneity (coverage), papers' structure (thickness, grammage, density), whiteness, surface wettability, barrier (air, oxygen and water vapour) properties and adhesion (surface strength). The coating homogeneity was dependent primarily on the suspensions' viscosity, and secondarily on the applied coating parameters, whereby CNCs could be applied at 1–2 times higher injection speeds (up to 80 mL/min) and versatile coating weights, but required a relatively longer time to dry. The CNCs thus exhibited outstanding air (4.2–1.5 nm/Pa s) and oxygen (2.7–1.1 cm3 mm/m2 d kPa) barrier performance at 50% RH and 22–33 g/m2 deposition, whereas on top deposited Cht (3–4 g/m2) reduced its wetting time and improved the water vapour barrier (0.23–0.28 g mm/m2 d Pa). The balanced barrier properties were achieved due to the polar characteristic of CNCs, the hydrophobic nature of Cht and the quantity of the applied bilayer coating that can provide sustainable paper-based packaging.

Treatment of vulvar cancer recurrences with electrochemotherapy : a detailed analysis of possible causes for unsuccessful treatment

Abstract: Background. Electrochemotherapy has good local effectiveness in the treatment of vulvar cancer. Most studies have reported the safety and effectiveness of electrochemotherapy for palliative treatment of gynecological cancers and mostly vulvar squamous cell carcinoma. Some tumors, however, fail to respond to electrochemotherapy. The biological features/determinants for the nonresponsiveness are not determined yet. Patient and methods. A recurrence of vulvar squamous cell carcinoma was treated by electrochemotherapy using intravenous administration of bleomycin. The treatment was performed by hexagonal electrodes according to standard operating procedures. We analyzed the factors that could determine nonresponsiveness to electrochemotherapy. Results. Based on the presented case of nonresponsive vulvar recurrence to electrochemotherapy, we hypothesize that the vasculature of the tumors prior to treatment may predict the response to electrochemotherapy. The histological analysis showed minimal presence of blood vessels in the tumor. Thus, low perfusion may reduce drug delivery and lead to a lower response rate because of the minor antitumor effectiveness of vascular disruption. In this case, no immune response in the tumor was elicited by electrochemotherapy. Conclusions. In this case, of nonresponsive vulvar recurrence treated by electrochemotherapy, we analyzed possible factors that could predict treatment failure. Based on histological analysis, low vascularization of the tumor was observed, which hampered drug delivery and distribution and resulted in no vascular disrupting action of electrochemotherapy. All these factors could contribute to ineffective treatment with electrochemotherapy.

Cationised fibre-based cellulose multi-layer membranes for sterile and high-flow bacteria retention and inactivation

Abstract: Low-cost, readily available, or even disposable membranes in water purification or downstream biopharma processes are becoming attractive alternatives to expensive polymeric columns or filters. In this article, the potential of microfiltration membranes prepared from differently orientated viscose fibre slivers, infused with ultrafine quaternised (qCNF) and amino-hydrophobised (aCNF) cellulose nanofibrils, were investigated for capturing and deactivating the bacteria from water during vacuum filtration. The morphology and capturing mechanism of the single- and multi-layer structured membranes were evaluated using microscopic imaging and colloidal particles. They were assessed for antibacterial efficacy and the retention of selected bacterial species (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Micrococcus luteus), differing in the cell envelope structure, hydrodynamic biovolume (shape and size) and their clustering. The aCNF increased biocidal efficacy significantly when compared to qCNF-integrated membrane, although the latter retained bacteria equally effectively by a thicker multi-layer structured membrane. The retention of bacterial cells occurred through electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions, as well as via interfibrous pore diffusion, depending on their physicochemical properties. For all bacterial strains, the highest retention (up to 100% or log 6 reduction) at >50 L/h∗bar∗m2 flow rate was achieved with a 4-layer gradient-structured membrane containing different aCNF content, thereby matching the performance of industrial polymeric filters used for removing bacteria.

Safety and feasibility of vulvar cancer treatment with electrochemotherapy

Abstract: A prospective institutional study was conducted at the Institute of Oncology in Ljubljana. The main objective of the study is to determine the safety and feasibility of electrochemotherapy in the treatment of vulvar cancer recurrence. From July 2020 to January 2023, 10 patients with vulvar cancer recurrence were enrolled in our study. Patients were treated with an intravenous application of bleomycin, and 8 min later, electric pulses were applied locally to the tumor to increase the cytotoxicity of bleomycin. The treatment could be performed in all patients, demonstrating its feasibility, and no adverse effects were documented, proving that the treatment is safe. In conclusion, this is the first prospective study of electrochemotherapy in the treatment of local vulvar cancer recurrence conducted for nonpalliative purposes, demonstrating its safety and feasibility.

Zgodovina šole na Zgornji Ložnici med letoma 1881 in 1961 : magistrsko delo

Abstract: Začetek pouka na Venčeslu, kakor se je področje okoli Zgornje Ložnice nekdaj imenovalo, je prepleten z začetkom samostojnosti venčeseljske cerkve oziroma s časom, ko je leta 1785 postala samostojna kuracija. Maksimilijan Resnik, prvi znani samostojni kurat pri sv. Venčeslu, je začel poučevati otroke in nastala je nedeljska šola. Okoli leta 1850 ji je sledila zasebna šola, ki jo je vodil upokojeni učitelj Primož Felicijan Brölich. Pouk je po njegovi smrti začasno zamrl. Potreba po šoli na zgornjeložniškem je bila prisotna in kljub neugodnemu gmotnemu položaju kraja je ob prigovarjanju narodnih buditeljev leta 1881 nastala Enorazredna ljudska šola pri svetem Venčeslju. Prvi tukajšnji učitelj je bil Gabrijel Majcen, nato je bil na mesto stalnega učitelja nastavljen Ivan Povh, dolgoletni šolski upravitelj. Pouk je potekal v materinščini učencev, v slovenskem jeziku, poučevalo se je nemščino, s šolskim delom so bili povezani zakramenti (spoved, obhajilo, skušnja), praznovanja državnih praznikov so bila spremljana z obiski svetih maš. V letu 1895 je šolo prizadel potres, leto kasneje požar. V šolskem letu 1902/03 je bila Enorazredna ljudska šola Venčesl razširjena v dvorazrednico. Obdobje dvorazrednice je zaznamovala prva svetovna vojna, pouk je bil okrnjen in nereden. Pouk nemščine je po vojni zamenjal pouk srbohrvaščine in cirilice. Uvedlo se je novo ocenjevanje, obratno od dosedanjega, novost pri delu je bila tudi vpeljava šolskih izletov in ekskurzij. Leta 1924 je na mestu šolskega upravitelja upokojenega Ivana Povha nasledil njegov sin Stanko Povh. Z združitvijo bivših krajevnih političnih občin leta 1933 je število šoloobveznih otrok naraščalo in šola je bila avgusta 1935 razširjena v trirazrednico. V času okupacije se je na zgornjeložniški šoli pod nemškimi učitelji izvajal nemški pouk. Partizani so v noči iz so v noči iz 7. na 8. avgust 1944 šolsko poslopje zažgali, saj si je nemško vojaštvo nameravalo v njem urediti postojanko. Po vojni sta se na Venčesl vrnila slovenska učitelja, pouk je v neidealnih okoliščinah sprva potekal na prostem pod hrastom, kasneje v šolski baraki, ki je bila tudi središče kulturnega življenja. Leta 1955 so dobili novo šolsko zgradbo in uvedlo se je novo ime Osnovna šola Zgornja Ložnica. V sklopu reorganizacije osnovnih šol občine je bilo prejšnjih 16 šol združenih v 9 večjih in s 1. januarjem 1962 je bila ukinjena samostojnost Osnovne šole Zgornja Ložnica. Postala je podružnica in tako je ostalo do danes.

Podoba Juda v izbranih delih Pavline Pajk, Josipa Vošnjaka, Otona Župančiča in Antona Novačana

Abstract: Magistrsko delo obravnava podobo Juda v izbranih delih slovenskih avtorjev in avtoric od druge polovice 19. do začetka 20. stoletja, in sicer Pavline Pajk, Josipa Vošnjaka, Otona Župančiča in Antona Novačana. Teoretični del orisuje zgodovinsko ozadje judovstva na Slovenskem, razvoj oblik antisemitizma, judovske dejavnosti in vloge v gospodarstvu, ki sta pogojevali družbeno mišljenje za oblikovanje predsodkov in stereotipizacije judovskih telesnih in psiholoških značilnosti ter izhodišča za podobe Drugega. Analitični del zajema obravnavo izbranega literarnega korpusa šestih literarnih besedil slovenskih avtorjev in avtoric, pri katerih smo zaznali dovoljšno pojavnost Juda. Vanj spadajo drame Pene (1889) in Premogar (1893) Josipa Vošnjaka, Herman Celjski (1928) Antona Novačana ter Veronika Deseniška (1924) Otona Župančiča, daljša povest Josipa Vošnjaka Navzgor-navzdol (1909) in roman Pavline Pajk Arabela (1885). V kronološkem zaporedju nas v posameznih literarnih besedilih zanima tematizacija judovstva, stereotipizacija glede na zunanjo in notranjo karakterizacijo Judov in opredelitev Juda kot podobe Drugega. Judom kot pripadnikom religije in hkrati etnične skupine so bile skozi različna obdobja zgodovine očitane mnoge kulturno-verske razlike, ki so vodile k pripisovanju značilnosti nepredstavljivih razsežnosti. Nenehno so bili odmaknjeni na rob družbe, njihove dejavnosti in vloge v gospodarstvu so bile ključnega pomena za mnoge krivice in tegobe. Ideološke in družbene spremembe so omogočale sprejetje antisemitskih idej, industrializacija in modernizacija pa sta v novonastali družbeni shemi pogojevali razvoj stereotipnega Juda v tolikšnih oblikah. Literatura nam predstavlja obraz miselnosti družbe. Antisemitizem je na prelomu stoletja preveval vse tri slovenske politične tabore, Judje so za Slovence bili glavni ideološki nasprotniki. Nacionalni interesi s političnim ozadjem so pod vplivom okolice našli obliko in obraz v književnosti tudi pri nas. Z izjemo drame Premogar je pogostost prisotnosti judovskih likov v izbranih literarnih delih po pričakovanjih močna. V nekaterih ponazoritvah je tematizacija judovstva nazornejša, vendarle pa lahko v vsakem izmed izbranih del opazimo vsaj kakšno obliko. Prav tako je skoraj povsod judovski videz upodobljen s poudarjenim nosom, kodrastimi lasmi, temnimi očmi, določata ga tudi umazanost in temna oblačila. Preseganje stereotipizacije zunanjosti je redka. Judje so zastopani kot antagonisti, izjema je le Veronika Deseniška, odražajo jih številne negativne značajske lastnosti – spletkarstvo, lažnivost, koristoljubnost, pohlepnost itd. Obenem so v veliki meri povezani z bogastvom in denarnimi posli, tudi s temnimi silami, in so zastopniki stereotipnih judovskih poklicev. Opaziti je judovsko drugačnost – jezikovno, versko, tudi nacionalno. Čeprav so del skupnosti, iz nje izstopajo in zavzemajo položaj Drugega.

Določitev tehnološkega postopka in izdelava obroča rezervoarja za zadrževanje olja : diplomsko delo

Abstract: V diplomskem delu je opisana tehnologija izdelave za mehansko obdelavo obroča rezervoarja za reverzibilno črpalko, ki jo bomo v zaključni fazi tudi mersko preverili, če so uporabljeni tehnološki postopki zagotovili želeni rezultat izdelave. Diplomska naloga je vsebinsko razdeljena na tri dele. V prvem bodo opisani osnovni postopki odrezovanja, v drugem obdelovalni stroji in merilna naprava za prednastavljanje orodja, v tretjem delu pa bomo na podlagi pregledane tehnološke dokumentacije določili ustrezno tehnologijo. Določili bomo vrste obdelav in njihov vrstni red izvajanja, izbrali rezalna orodja in določili potrebne parametre za obdelavo obroča rezervoarja. Na koncu smo s pomočjo različnih merilnih instrumentov preverili mersko ustreznost izdelanega obroča rezervoarja in meritve zapisali v merilni protokol, kjer smo primerjali želene mere z dejanskimi. Zapisane meritve, ki smo jih izmerili sami ter ji zabeležili na merilnem protokolu, so bile skladne z želenimi merami, ki so bile podane v tehnološki dokumentaciji, kar pomeni, da je bila tehnologija ustrezno določena. Obroč rezervoarja je bil prav tako izdelan in sestavljen v želeni obliki. Obdelane so bile vse površine, za katere je bila predvidena mehanska obdelava z ustrezno kakovostjo obdelave in z upoštevanjem tolerančnih območij.

Možnosti zaposlovanja računovodij na Koroškem

Abstract: Računovodja predstavlja pomemben subjekt v organizaciji, skrbi namreč za uspešno delovanje podjetja in za celotno informacijsko dejavnost v podjetju. Informacije, ki jih pridobi računovodja skozi računovodska poročila, so odločilni dejavnik nadaljnjega razvoja podjetja, pomembne pa so tudi za zunanje uporabnike. Računovodja za opravljanje svojega dela v organizaciji potrebuje poleg znanja o računovodstvu tudi strokovna znanja, računalniške spretnosti in še mnogo drugih pomembnih veščin, zaradi katerih postane dober računovodja. Diplomski projekt je sestavljen iz dveh delov. V prvem delu smo predstavili pomen računovodje v podjetju, osredotočili smo se tudi na znanja, ki jih potrebuje, da lahko svoje naloge opravlja odgovorno. Poleg potrebnih znanj smo opredelili tudi veščine in spretnosti dobrega računovodje. Dotaknili smo se etike in kodeksa, ki ga mora pri svojem poklicu upoštevati računovodski strokovnjak. V drugem delu diplomskega projekta smo analizirali, kakšna je možnost zaposlitve računovodje na Koroškem. S pomočjo spletne strani Zavoda Republike Slovenije za zaposlovanje smo analizirali, kakšno je bilo v preteklosti povpraševanje po računovodji na Koroškem. Nato smo na podlagi obstoječih oglasov za prosta delovna mesta opredelili in analizirali, katere pogoje more izpolnjevati računovodja, da ga podjetje zaposli. Poleg tega smo analizirali tudi trenutni obseg povpraševanja po računovodji. Za lažjo predstavo smo naredili primerjavo možnosti zaposlitve računovodij v celotni Sloveniji in na Koroškem. V tem delu nam je bilo znanje, ki smo ga pridobili skozi celoten proces izobraževanja, v veliko pomoč.
