Cu(II) and Ni(II) adsorption on torrefied wood waste biomass

Abstract: The aim of the research was to study the torrefaction processes of wood biomass, compare the product characteristics at different torrefaction temperatures, and assess both moisture adsorption on raw and torrefied samples, as well as metal (Cu(II) and Ni(II)) adsorption on torrefied biomass. The novelty of the research was to investigate whether the presence of adsorbed metals in torrefied biomass significantly affects the energetic properties of the torrefied biomass, compared to torrefied biomass without metals. First, wood samples were torrefied at temperatures of 250 °C, 350 °C, and 400 °C. Following torrefaction, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was performed to evaluate mass loss and thermal stability. Next, changes in surface functional groups were examined, and higher heating values (HHV) were measured to assess the energy content. The results showed that torrefaction significantly increased the hydrophobicity of the biomass, leading to reduced moisture adsorption and enhanced material properties. Additionally, the adsorption of Cu(II) and Ni(II) ions on torrefied biomass was investigated. The results showed that the adsorption efficiency for Cu(II) was higher, reaching 62.4%, compared to Ni(II) at 21.2%. The adsorption process followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model, which indicated that chemisorption was the dominant mechanism.

Adsorpcijske lastnosti toreficirane biomase : diplomsko delo univerzitetnega študijskega programa I. stopnje

Abstract: Neposredna uporaba kmetijskih in lesnih ostankov kot goriva je običajno otežena zaradi njihovih slabih energetskih lastnosti. Torefikacija je metoda, ki nam pomaga pri nadgradnji biomase v izdelek z izboljšanimi energetskimi lastnostmi. Namen diplomskega dela je preučiti procese torefikacije biomase, adsorpcije kovin na toreficirano biomaso in adsorpcije vlage na surove ter toreficirane vzorce. Dokazati moramo, da se lastnosti toreficirane biomase razlikujejo od originalne biomase. Najprej izvedemo torefikacijo našega vzorca pri različnih temperaturah, nato analiziramo izgubo mase in izkoristek mase. Na vzorec, toreficiran pri najvišji temperaturi, adsorbiramo kovine. Vse pridobljene vzorce analiziramo s termogravimetrično analizo, FTIR analizo in merimo njihove zgornje kurilne vrednosti. Rezultati kažejo, da so lastnosti toreficirane biomase močno odvisne od temperature torefikacije. Med procesom torefikacije se ne izgublja samo masa biomase, ampak tudi energijska vsebnost, ki se sprošča v obliki hlapov. Vendar se v plinasto fazo izgubi več mase kot energije. Ta pojav povzroči višjo kurilno vrednost toreficirane biomase. Zaradi dehidracijskih reakcij, ki potekajo med torefikacijo, je adsorpcija vlage toreficirane biomase zelo omejena. Te reakcije preprečujejo vezavo vodika v biomasi z vodo, zato je vsebnost vlage precej manjša v primerjavi z vsebnostjo vlage v surovi biomasi.
