Size and shape variability of the wing in burnet moth, Zygaena ephialtes (L., 1767) (Lepidoptera: Zygaenidae)

Abstract: The burnet moth, Zygaena ephialtes (L., 1767) (Lepidoptera: Zygaenidae) is a distinctly polymorphic species of moth appearing in several color morphotypes. This study examined whether the variability of the Z. ephialtes forewing could be explained by geometric morphometric methods. The analysis included 70 male specimens from five localities in Montenegro (Plužine, Tepca, Dobrilovina, Gusinje and Rugovska Gorge), and one locality in North Macedonia (Kožuf Mountain) belonging to the subspecies Zygaena ephialtes pannonica Holik, 1937 and Zygaena ephialtes istoki Silbernagel, 1944, respectively, collected between 1981 to 2018. The forewing outline and the aposematic color pattern formed by five spots were analyzed separately. Neither forewing size nor forewing spots pattern size exhibited interpopulation heterogeneity. Size variation of the basal spot was independent from the rest. Considering the forewing outline shape, the apical portion was the most variable and different among populations. Two morphological groups were recognized: a group with a narrower pointed forewing (samples: Kožuf Mountain, Rugovska Gorge and Tepca), and a group with a wider forewing with a blunt apex (Plužine, Gusinje). Neither the outline or the spots pattern of the forewing supported the distinction between the subspecies Z. e. pannonica and Z. e. istoki.

Vpliv podnebnih sprememb in gozdarskih aktivnosti na številčnost malega skovika Glaucidium passerinum na območju Pohorja : Magistrsko delo

Abstract: Slovenija je gozdnata dežela, saj gozdovi poraščajo dobro polovico države, hkrati pa jo odlikuje nadvse pestra narava. Gozdovi izstopajo po visoki biodiverziteti, pri čemer so ptice med bolj opaznimi skupinami živali – z njimi se srečujemo na vsakem koraku. V raziskavi sem leta 2024 popisovala prisotnost najmanjše evropske sove, malega skovika (Glaucidium passerinum), na območju zavarovanega območja (SPA - special protection area) Pohorje. Vrsta je na seznamu Dodatka 1 Direktive o pticah in je opredeljena kot kvalifikacijska vrsta za SPA Pohorje (SI5000006). V raziskavi sem ugotavljala vpliv podnebnih sprememb in gozdarskih aktivnosti na prisotnost malega skovika v gozdovih Pohorja. Poleg tega sem svoje podatke popisa primerjala s podatki iz leta 2015. Na več lokacijah sem v popoldanskem času predvajala posnetek oglašanja malega skovika in beležila njegov odziv. Prav tako sem merila temperaturo v času popisa in prisotnost starega drevja. Povprečna temperatura v paritvenem obdobju spomladi se je v primerjavi z letom 2015 zvišala za 1,77 °C. Popisne točke sem izbirala večinoma v smrekovo-bukovem gozdu in na gozdnem robu. Stari listavci, ki so primeren habitat za gnezdenje malega skovika, so prevladovali na okoli 50 % popisnega območja. Število malega skovika se v primerjavi z letom 2015 ni bistveno spremenilo. Ugotovila sem, da višje temperature v letu 2024 niso pomembno vplivale na prisotnost vrste, hkrati pa je gozd v veliki meri dobro ohranjen in primeren habitat za malega skovika.

Growth performance, meat quality, and fecal microbial population in limousin bulls supplemented with hydrolyzable tannins

Abstract: The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of supplementation of hydrolyzable tannins (HT) from sweet chestnut wood extract (Castanea sativa Mill.) to the diet of Limousin bulls on growth rate, carcass and meat quality traits, and fecal Clostridia strain levels in a 7-month feeding trial. Thirty-two bulls were randomly assigned to four treatment groups (CON (without addition of HT); TAN 1 (1 g HT kg−1 DM); TAN 2 (1.5 g HT kg−1 DM); and TAN 3 (1.5 g HT kg−1 DM with a nominally lower dose of concentrate). Compared with the CON group, supplementation with HT significantly (p < 0.050) increased bull growth rate during 4–7 months, whereas carcass and meat quality traits were unaffected during the last three months of fattening. Supplementation of HT significantly reduced meat drip loss (p = 0.000) compared with the CON group. No effects were observed on the total number of fecal Clostridia strains; however, the concentration of Clostridium perfringens was significantly lower (p = 0.004) in TAN 1 than that in the CON group. The results obtained in fattening bulls indicate that the addition of HT is justified in practice to improve growth performance and feed efficiency without adverse effects on the carcass and meat quality.

Environmental factors influencing the distribution of habitat types in the highlands of the Kamnik - Savinja Alps

Abstract: In this work, we investigated the relationship between habitat types (HTs) and selected environmental factors in the highlands at altitudes of 1800–2558 m in the Kamnik-Savinja (KS) Alps in Slovenia. For 275 sampling sites, we identified seven HTs in their typical form and 11 ecotones, and provided field and modelled data for 14 environmental factors. HTs-environment relationships were analysed using multivariate ordination methods. In addition, binomial generalised linear mixed models were applied to reveal the influence of environmental factors on the occurrence of most frequent HTs in the study area [Outer Alpine Pinus mugo scrub (EUNIS code F2.4/Natura 2000 code 4070*), Southern rusty sedge grasslands (E4.413/6170), Cushion sedge carpets (E4.433/6170) and Fine calcareous screes (H2.43/8120)]. Results showed that certain modelled data (e.g. average annual air temperature) combined with field measurements (e.g. inclination, soil surface and soil moisture) can be effective predictors of most representative HTs in the study area, and thus useful for further refining of monitoring. Our study contributes to the knowledge and understanding of the relationships between environmental conditions and the occurrence of highland HTs in KS Alps, which probably concerns a great part of the Alpine highlands. Such knowledge is essential for assessing credible long-term conservation planning.

Ontološki status bioloških vrst kot naravnih vrst in problem križanja kategorij : doktorska disertacija

Abstract: V disertaciji predstavimo enega od osrednjih problemov v filozofiji biologije, in sicer problem bioloških vrst kot naravnih vrst. Čeprav v začetku predstavimo uveljavljene definicije naravnih vrst, se v nadaljnji analizi izkaže, da je definiranje problematično, in sicer zaradi preozkega okvira definiranja. To se predvsem pokaže pri dokazovanju bioloških vrst kot naravnih vrst in pri dokazovanju družbenih vrst kot naravnih vrst. Na začetku v disertaciji obravnavamo in analiziramo tradicionalne poglede ter stališča, v nadaljevanju analiziramo tudi modernejše. Skozi analiziranje ontološkega statusa bioloških vrst kot naravnih vrst dokazujemo naravnost izbranih vrst, kar predstavimo tudi v nadaljevanju pri problematiki družbenih vrst. V disertaciji predstavimo tudi problematiko presečnosti kategorij in s tem izpodbijamo določene trditve, ki zagovarjajo nenaravnost vrst s presečnimi kategorijami. S pomočjo opredelitve problema presečnosti v disertaciji predstavimo in analiziramo trditve, da so biološke in družbene vrste lahko naravne vrste, in zagovarjamo trditev, da je to možno navkljub presečnosti kategorij teh vrst. Rešitev problematike ontološkega statusa naravnosti bioloških in družbenih vrst predstavimo z zagovorom trditev, ki utemeljujejo definiranje osrednjih pojmov in iskanje bistvenih značilnosti ter robnih pogojev glede na področja analiziranja.

Osamitev in karakterizacija bakterije clostridioides difficile iz vzorcev komposta in iztrebkov malih sesalcev : magistrsko delo študijskega programa 2. stopnje

Abstract: Clostridioides difficile je Gram pozitivna, striktno anaerobna bakterija, ki tvori zelo odporne spore, in velja za eno najpomembnejših človeških črevesnih patogenih bakterij. Čeprav so najbolj raziskan rezervoar bakterije bolnišnična okolja, se v zadnjem času zaradi pogostejših okužb izven bolnišnic pojavlja več raziskav o okoljskih rezervoarjih. Spore, ki jih tvori bakterija, so odporne na različne kemične in fizikalne dejavnike ter se lahko prenašajo med različnimi okolji. Prisotne so v prsti, vodi, domačih kompostnikih, rečnih sedimentih, našli so jih na površinah v gospodinjstvih, podplatih obuval in šapah domačih živali. V okviru magistrske naloge smo preverili pogostost in raznolikost PCR-ribotipov v vzorcih komposta in iztrebkih malih sesalcev. Okrog vsakega od treh kompostnikov smo nastavili 6-8 živolovnih pasti za male sesalce. Vzporedno z ulovljenimi malimi sesalci smo vzorčili kompostnike na treh vzorčnih mestih. Skupno smo tako zbrali 9 vzorcev komposta in 16 vzorcev iztrebkov malih sesalcev. Male sesalce smo determinirali do vrste in jih izpustili nazaj v okolje. Za nadaljnjo analizo smo uporabili le njihove iztrebke. Na bakterijo C. difficile je bilo pozitivnih vseh 9 vzorcev komposta in 2 vzorca iztrebkov malih sesalcev, kar je predstavljalo 12,5 % vseh vzorcev malih sesalcev. Skupno smo osamili 103 izolata, 91 iz vzorcev komposta in 12 iz vzorcev iztrebkov malih sesalcev. Izolate smo razvrstili v 10 različnih PCR-ribotipov. Toksigen je bil samo en PCR-ribotip, in sicer 014/020, ki je pripadal toksinotipu 0. Iz iztrebkov smo osamili dva različna PCR-ribotipa. PCR-ribotip SLO 308 smo izolirali tako iz iztrebka malega sesalca kot iz vzorca komposta na isti lokaciji, kar nakazuje na možen prenos C. difficile med malimi sesalci in kompostom.

Pregled orodij za analizo in vizualizacijo performans relacijskih podatkovnih baz

Abstract: Relacijske podatkovne baze in sisteme za upravljanje relacijskih podatkovnih baz (SUPB) je potrebno stalno analizirati in spremljati njihovo delovanje. Želimo si, da bi pravočasno zaznali trende v delovanju podatkovne baze in s tem preprečili počasno in neučinkovito delovanje. Pri tem nam zelo pomaga analiza in vizualizacija performans relacijskih podatkovnih baz. Na trgu obstaja mnogo rešitev, ki so odprtokodne in zaprto kodne. V teoretičnem delu diplomske naloge bomo opisali relacijske podatkovne baze, sisteme za upravljanje relacijskih podatkovnih baz, SQL, značilnosti performans relacijskih podatkovnih baz in predstavili podatkovno bazo ter SUPB-je, ki jih bomo uporabili v praktičnem delu naloge. Prav tako bomo opisali in predstavili analizo performans relacijskih podatkovnih baz ter pomen vizualizacije pri razumevanju analize. V praktičen delu bomo predstavili in primerjali orodja, ki so namenjena analizi in vizualizaciji performans relacijskih podatkovnih baz. Pri pregledu posameznih orodij nas bo zanimala kompatibilnost s podatkovnimi bazami, odprtokodnost oz. zaprto kodnost, funkcije in funkcionalnosti, enostavnost uporabe, vpliv orodja na performans podatkovnih baz, razširljivost, opozorila in obveščanje, podpora in skupnost, prilagoditev, cena, integracija z drugimi orodji ter varnost.

V prispevku obravnavamo stratigrafijo, arheološke najdbe, dendrokronološke raziskave, raziskave makroskopskih rastlinskih ostankov, ostanke sesalske makrofavne, ptičev in rib.

Changes in use of communication channels by livestock farmers during the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract: The study aims to identify any changes in the communication channels used by Slovenian livestock farmers before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the main (dis)advantages of relying on them. An online survey was completed by 502 Slovenian farmers of various farm enterprises in winter 2020/2021. Most respondents generally used telephone, e-mail, and the internet to obtain agricultural information before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. During the pandemic, farmers increasingly relied on online conferences and social networking sites. At the same time, younger farmers and farmers with a higher education level used digital channels the most frequently, with men doing so more often than women. Digital channels were primarily used by cattle and horse farmers, while cattle farmers showed the greatest online conference participation. Respondents reported having more time to spend with their families and animals as an advantage and the lack of face-to-face interaction with other farmers and advisers as a disadvantage of such communication patterns. As the study reveals differences in the use of communication channels during the COVID-19 pandemic by various farmers, a new communication strategy is needed that involves the use of appropriate communication channels to provide farmers with agricultural information both during the COVID-19 situation and later.
